Our Story
The Journey
MAAIA Boots is a 100% Māori-owned, whānau-run gumboot business founded by Charis Tutaki and Ariki Honetana-Paea. Their journey has been shaped by resilience, aroha, and a shared desire to create something meaningful for their whānau and wider community.
A Love for Te Ao Māori
Charis grew up in Kelston, West Auckland, away from her Māori roots in Waiuku. Feeling distant from her culture, at the age of 17, she began building a career through a number of roles with a strong focus on Māori and rangatahi initiatives. This was her way to reconnect with her culture while using her skill set to awhi her community and people. Although she was very passionate about her mahi, her path changed in 2024, when the pair welcomed their first pēpi, Maia. Motherhood wasn’t quite as easy going as Charis had anticipated and juggling full-time mahi as a new mother was not something she felt fit. Shortly after, she decided to explore opportunities of self-employment with hopes it would allow her to spend more time focusing on her new journey as a māmā.
Ariki was raised in Manurewa, South Auckland, surrounded by Te Ao Māori spending his schooling years in Kura Kaupapa Māori. His passion for mahi toi led him to launch Toi by Ariki, a Māori art business, which quickly gained recognition. During his journey in mahi toi, he received a lot of requests for “moko-customised gumboots”. This was something Ariki was eager to explore, but after evaluating the prices of gumboots alone, he came to the conclusion that this project wouldn’t be sustainable for his business in the long-run. He reached out to a popular NZ gumboot brand to explore collaboration opportunities instead but was declined. The pair recognized that gumboots were a staple in New Zealand, especially in the Māori community. Charis and Ariki began a hunt for a Māori gumboot brand which left them stumped when they found none. And so just like that, the idea of MAAIA Boots was born.
From struggle to strength
Although MAAIA Boots was established in 2025, the idea for it was first planted much earlier, during one of the more challenging periods in Charis and Ariki's lives. They had the vision but significant struggles in the couple’s lives quickly overshadowed their plans for the future. After years of feeling lost and losing motivation, the unexpected happened when they welcomed their first-born child. It was a huge wake-up call they truely needed. The hardships they experienced quickly became the foundation for their determination to build something lasting for their whānau and future. Motivated by their new purpose in life as parents, they took their idea and once and for all made it a reality

The Birth of Maia
In 2024, alongside the arrival of their daughter Maia, MAAIA Boots was officially born. With Charis’ passion to build her own brand and immerse herself more in Te Ao Māori combined with Ariki’s creative talent and passion for toi Māori they set out to create gumboots that were not only practical but also proudly Māori.
The kaupapa quickly struck a chord. Even before launching, MAAIA had grown a wave of support on social media, showing that Charis and Ariki's story and struggles resonated deeply with the wider community, especially young Māori who experienced similar obstacles.
MAAIA might just be a “gumboot brand” to some, but it’s living proof to rangatahi Māori that might resonate with the story of how it came to be.
"‘Maaia’ in Māori means ‘Brave’ and when you walk in MAAIA Boots, we hope you feel the mana to stay steady on your journey of life"
